Roooibos tea, meaning 'Red Bush' in Afrikaans, comes from a plant native to South Africa, Aspalathus linearis. Although not a member of the Camella Sinensis group of teas Rooibos has become an increasingly popular drink for its neutral, earthy flavour. This neutral quality means the tea is easily flavoured to create different tastes.
Naturally caffeine free this tea is favoured by the health conscious as it is also very low in tannin and high in antioxidants.
Rooibos is produced much the same as other black teas, with the leaves of the tree being oxidised after the harvest. The oxidisation process gives the tea leaves their distinctive reddish colour.
