Chia (Salva hispanica) is a species of flowering plant that belongs to the mint family. It is native to central and southern Mexico but is grown commercially as a food crop in South America and Australia with Australia being the world's largest producer.
The seeds of the Chia plant are typically small ovals about 1mm in diameter. Per 100 grams they provide quite a hit of nutrition with good amounts of dietary fibre, protein, magnesium, calcium, antioxidants and essential fatty acids.
They have also been linked to weight loss as they absorb up to 12 times their weight in liquid when soaked, contributing to feelings of fullness.
Chia Seeds have essentially no flavour so although you can eat them straight out of the bag, the suggested use is to combine them with other foods. They can be ground up and sprinkled liberally on cereal or yoghurt or included in recipes. They are commonly added to bread, muffins, cereal and smoothies. They also make a great egg replacement.
