What is BV?
When it comes to problems 'down there' most people have heard of thrush which is a very common yeast imbalance that is usually accompanied by itching and an odour; suffice to say that you know it's there! Bacterial vaginosis, on the other hand, is also a common condition but can go undiagnosed for a long time as it is much more subtle in its presentation. Long-term, untreated BV present in the vagina can actually cause problems with fertility in the future so it's important to recognise and treat the problem. BV is caused by an overgrowth of bacteria within the vagina. In a healthy body there is an even balance of good bacteria but when suffering from bacterial vaginosis some of these strains will begin to multiply at a faster rate than others leaving an imbalance. As many as 1 in 3 women will have BV at some time in their lives.
Possible symptoms of Bacterial Vaginosis:(you may have all or none of these symptoms)
- Probably the most common symptom is vague discomfort during or after sexual intercourse
- Pasty greyish/white discharge
- Fishy odour
- Sometimes (but often not) accompanied by itching of the vagina
- Feeling of discomfort or burning during urination (can be confused with cystitis)
How Can Colloidal Silver Help?
Conventional treatment for BV consists of a course of antibiotics which you may wish to avoid. Maybe you have heard about the germicide properties of colloidal silver. This ancient element first discovered around 5000 BC has a rich history of medicinal use. Drinking vessels were made from silver to help kill the bacteria in the water before consumption. Nowadays silver is added to bandages and wound dressings to help prevent infection and it's these same infection fighting properties that make it an excellent choice in the treatment of bacterial vaginosis. Silver has the ability to kill 99% of bacteria on contact, this is achieved by removing an electron from the invading host. The video below shows this process in action. Colloidal silver consists of silver filaments suspended in water which acts like a mild broad-range antibiotic being effective on hundreds of different types of bacteria. Before antibiotics were discovered during world war II colloidal silver was the treatment of choice for many ailments.
How to Use Colloidal Silver to Treat BV?
- Soak a tampon in high quality colloidal silver and insert into the vagina
- This should be changed every 3 - 5 hours
- After around 2 days you should notice a reduction in discharge, symptoms and odour
This treatment involves adding colloidal silver to the vagina with the use of a douche. Although this method is highly effective it should only be used in severe cases as the use of douches is still somewhat controversial and may lead to other issues.
How Can I Prevent Bacterial Vaginosis in the Future?
A lot of the time BV can occur for no apparent reason. However, there are a number of underlying factors that are known to contribute to BV.
- Do not push water into your vagina to clean it.
- Avoid using bath oils, scented soaps or any chemical based products in or around your vagina which can upset the bacterial and Ph balance.
- It is best to use soft, gentle washing detergents for underwear.
- Always wear breathable, cotton underwear.
- Keep the area as germ free as possible during sex and by always wiping front to back after going to the toilet.
Silver is not a toxic element when taken prudently but if taken orally in really excessive dosages (like large daily doses for many, many years) it can result in a condition called Argyria which is a build up of silver particles in the body causing the skin to turn a greyish blue colour. This is really not something you want as it is non-reversible and clearly not enviable cosmetically. It is not problematic except when taken in exceptionally high doses over exceptionally long periods of time but this could be said for many, many elements or substances. Like any medicine or treatment, the dosages should be followed and common sense should prevail
Other Natural Remedies for Bacterial Vaginosis
Apple cider vinegar - This is one of the most popular remedies in the treatment of BV and with good reason. This tried and tested method is not only fast acting, but also one of the simplest to use. We recommend adding around two cups of raw apple cider vinegar to bath water each night for a week. For more serious cases a diluted solution of apple cider vinegar and water can be added to a vagnial douche. The powerful antibacterial properties of ACV help to reduce levels of bad bacteria as well as balancing the internal pH of the vagina.
Hydrogen Peroxide - Another hugely popular home remedy for BV is hydrogen peroxide. A number of studies have been carried out looking into its effectiveness, one of which concludes that douching with 30 millilitres (ml) of hydrogen peroxide every day for a week eliminated all BV symptoms in 89 percent of participants.
