Hydrogen Peroxide is water - H2O - with an additional oxygen atom - H2O2. That's all there is to it.
It is this extra oxygen that gives Hydrogen Peroxide its wide range of beneficial uses.
12% Hydrogen Peroxide stands between the more powerful 35% solution (licence required) and the weaker 3% solution. 12% hydrogen peroxide has powerful cleaning abilities but is too strong for any personal care use. It can, however, be diluted down to a 3% solution by adding distilled (purified) water. The ratio is as follows:
4 parts water to 1 part 12% H2O2.
Distilled water must be used to avoid the extra oxygen content of the H2O2 reacting with the contaminants in tap water, rendering your H2O2 useless.
Various sizes of Distilled Water can be found in our 'Distilled Water' category.
Once you have your 3% solution, you will find it is anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal. This makes it ideal for use as a cleaning solution. 3% Hydrogen Peroxide is a mild antiseptic and may be used on the skin to prevent infection of minor cuts, scrapes and burns. 3% Hydrogen Peroxide may also be used as a mouth rinse to help remove mucus or to relieve minor mouth irritation; canker / cold sores and gingivitis for example. 3% Hydrogen Peroxide works by releasing oxygen when it is applied to the affected area.
